When working in a document in OpenOffice, business users often seek the most efficient ways to make changes to areas such as page margins and text positioning to save time. A horizontal top ruler and vertical side ruler is available in OpenOffice Writer to help users boost productivity. Instead of the rulers only providing a measurement of current page settings, you can quickly change units of measurement and set margins, indents and tabs using the rulers, ruler-related menus and dialog boxes.
Display Rulers
1.Click “View” and select “Ruler” to display the rulers.
2.Click “Tools” and select “Options…” to open the Options dialog box if only one ruler appears or the “Ruler” option is gray.
3.Click the “+” sign next to OpenOffice.org Writer and select “View.”
4.Check the empty box next to the “Horizontal Ruler,” “Vertical Ruler” or both. Click “OK” and then try “View” and “Ruler” again.
Set Ruler Measurements
1.Right-click on a ruler and select the unit of measurement you need, such as “Centimeter” or “Inch.”
2.Click “Tools” and select “Options…” if you want to change both rulers at the same time. Salt n pepa blogspot.
3.Click the “+” sign next to OpenOffice.org Writer and select “General.”
4.Click the 'Down' arrow next to “Measurement Unit,' select a unit of measurement, and click “OK.'
Set Page Margins
1.Align your cursor over a horizontal boundary line separating a gray page margin section from the white section on the side ruler to display a black double-arrow icon.
2.Click and drag the line up or down as desired to adjust the top or bottom page margin.
3.Repeat with a vertical boundary line on the top ruler to adjust the left or right page margins.
Set Indents
1.Highlight a section of text in your document that you want to indent. Pella windows.
2.Click and drag the bottom left indent mark (shaped like an arrowhead) on the top ruler to adjust the space before the text. Click and drag the bottom right indent mark to adjust the space after the text. Click and drag the top indent mark to create an indent for the first line of text only.
3.Double-click the left or right gray end of the top ruler to open the Paragraph dialog box to change the indents using indentation values.
4.Click the “Indents & Spacing” tab if not selected. Enter a number value in the “Before Text,” “After Text” and “First Line” Indent section fields, and then click “OK.'
Set Tab Stops
1.Click the “Tab Stop” button where the rulers connect at the upper left corner to select a tab type: “L” icon for left, backward “L” icon for right, upside-down “T” icon for centered or upside-down “T” and decimal-mark icon for decimal. Click the white section of the top ruler once where you want to place the tab stop to create it.
2.Right-click a created tab stop icon on the ruler and select a tab type option to change an existing tab into a different type.
3.Double-click the top ruler white section to open the Paragraph dialog box to add a tab stop with an indentation value, or select a type of fill for the space before the tabbed text.
4.Click the “Tabs” tab, if not selected, and enter an indentation value in the Position field, or select a fill type section: “None,” dots, dashes, line or a character. Click “OK.”
Tip
- To remove a tab from the top ruler, click and drag it off the left or right end and it will disappear.

Most people don’t use the horizontal ruler when they’re composing messages, so we moved it out of the way. If you need to use the ruler to help you align text, graphics, tables, and other elements, here’s how to add the ruler button to the Quick Access Toolbar.
- From the Home tab, in the New group, click New Email.
- In the Message window, click Customize the Quick Access Toolbar, and then click More Commands to display the Outlook Options dialog box.
- In the Choose commands from list, click Commands Not in the Ribbon.
- Choose the Ruler command, and then click Add.The ruler is added to the Quick Access Toolbar on top.
You can use the horizontal ruler across the top of the Outlook message body in Outlook to align text, graphics, tables, and other elements. The ruler is available for all new messages, including when you reply to or forward an email message.
- In a new message window, at the top of the scroll bar next to the message body, click View Ruler.
